Gestational diabetes is a type of diabetes that occurs during pregnancy when the body cannot produce enough insulin to meet the increased needs. Insulin is a hormone produced by the pancreas that helps the body process glucose (sugar) from food into energy. When the body becomes insulin-resistant during pregnancy, glucose builds up in the bloodstream rather than being used for energy, leading to high blood sugar levels.
