In this article, we will understand detailed and accurate information about blood:
*What is blood? And its functions:
*What are the main components of blood?
*What is blood? and its functions-
Blood is a liquid connective tissue. Blood is a constantly circulating fluid providing the body with the nutrition Oxygen and waste removal. The average person has 5 to 6 of blood. Your blood is made up of liquid and solid. The liquid parts called plasma, is made of water, salt, protein. Over the half of your blood is plasma about 55% of your total. The solid parts of your blood contains red blood cells (RBC), white blood cells (WBC), and platelets about 45% of your total blood.
The functions of blood:
- Transport of Oxygen and Carbon dioxide (blood carries oxygen from lungs to the tissues and carbon dioxide in reverse direction.)
- Remove remove metabolic waste.
- Maintain maintain temperature, pH, and and fluid volume.
- Prevent prevent infection antibodies and WBC.
- Transport of hormones and enzymes.
- Osmotic function (maintenance of the cosmetic pressure in blood vessels)
- Protective protective function ( blood blood has antibodies and liquid side which perform the phagocytosis)
*What are the main components of blood?
There are the four main component of the blood-
- Plasma
- RBC (Red blood cells)
- WBC (White Blood Cells)
- Platelets
1. Plasma
Plasma accounts for the 55% of the total blood in our body. The plasma of our body is made up of water, ions, salts, proteins, nutrition, enzymes wastes, harmones & gases etc. The main function of the plasma is the removal of the waste from the cellular function that help to produce energy. The plasma helps maintain blood pressure (BP) and regulate body temperature. The role of plasma is to take nutrition, proteins and hormones to the parts of the body that need it.cells are put their waste products in the plasma. The plasma helps remove these wastes from the body.
2. RBC (Red Blood Cells)
RBC is stand for red blood corpuscles or Red blood cells. Red blood cells is also called erythrocytes. The size of RBC is biconcave shape. RBC consists of hemoglobin (red pigments). The colour of blood is red due to hemoglobin & iron is a substance that is found in hemoglobin. RBC carry Oxygen and Carbon dioxide in the blood . RBC make up 44% of the total blood in our body. An adult human have roughly 20 to 30 trillion RBC at any given time. Men have RBC 5-6 million/cubic millimeter (microliter) and women have RBC 4-5 million/cubic mm (microliter).
3. WBC (White Blood Cells)
WBC is stand for- white blood corpuscles or white blood cells. White blood cells is also called leucocytes. White blood cells are composed of granulocytes (neutrophils, eosinophils and basophils) & non granulocytes ( lymphocytes and monocytes). These cells act as a defence system against any infections in the human body. WBC protect you against illness and disease. WBCs flow through your bloodstream to fight bacteria, viruses, and other foreign Invaders that threaten your health. WBC make up about 1% of the total blood in our body. Normal WBC range 4500 to 11000 per microlitre. In newborn normal range of WBC 9000-30,000/ microlitre (mcL).
4. Platelets
Platelets is also called thrombocytes. The main function of the platelets is in the clotting of the blood. These cells are small colourless fragments in our blood that form clot and stop for prevent bleeding. Platelets are not cells, they are fragments of the large cells. The normal range of platelets in human body 1,50,000 to 450,000 microliter.
